I've run across dumb minimal defaults left in place. Our first site completely lost the categories on a save after several weeks of work because the log file size had been left at 8MB and was unable to do a rollback when the MySQL server fell flat on its face during a category change and another person doing inventory item entry.
Three other items that cause MySQL server to "go away" that need set are:
max_allowed_packet = 16M
wait_timeout = 1800
connect_timeout = 120

It’s amazing, but true that “Magento Hosting Partners” deliver stock OEM installations without any tuning. They don't actually take into account usability and setting up the site the most effective way to make or aid in the selling of product. Creating a site is one thing but getting in front of the competition and the difference between making a good amount of money and A LOT amount of money can be by optimizing the sate for sales.

Most people who are creating their websites only go with design. Thanks for the tip. I know that I definitely need to start playing with GIT ASAP. It's just that so far SVN is all me and my team ever needed.

Maciej,<br

It would allow to disable this resource hog called "tortoise svn cache generator" - especially painful in case of multiple big projects checked out.

Tortoise SVN misses one option from its git counterpart – “Shell Extended” status cache option – status cache for only one folder with full recursive overlays. I did exclude all the folders except my working copy, still it kept haunting me with a 100% cpu usage and scratching of the HD/SDD. I don't see any performance issues now that it is turned off. Is there anything else I need to worry about since I turned it off?
